Stages of education

Education at the JDU Doctoral School is conducted on a full-time basis and lasts 8 semesters (4 years). The education is conducted on the basis of the educational program defined by a resolution of the JDU Senate. At the end of each year of training, a doctoral student/postdoctoral fellow participates in a university open seminar, at which they present the results of their research and achievements for the past academic year, and submits to the Office of the Doctoral School by July 31:

  • a report on the implementation of the framework plan of training in the Doctoral School and other scientific/artistic activities in paper and electronic form and also,
  • individual plan for the implementation of activities in the Doctoral School for the coming academic year

constituting appendices to the educational program.
The supervisor(s) after each year of training shall submit to the SD Office their opinion on the progress of the PhD student's Individual Research Plan, including progress in the preparation of the dissertation.

1st year of education

  1. Appointment of supervisor(s):
    The procedure for the appointment of the supervisor(s) begins with the submission of an application by the doctoral student to the director of the SD within 30 days of commencement of training.
    The doctoral student's application on the form prescribed by the school director should include:
    1. proposals of the candidate(s) for the position of supervisor(s) along with the achievements for the last 5 years;
    2. consent of the candidate(s) to become a supervisor(s);
    3. justification of choice of supervisor(s).

The Director shall appoint a doctoral student a supervisor or supervisor(s )within 3 months from the date of commencement of training after consulting with the relevant discipline council and the School Council.

  1. Preparation of Individual Research Plan:
    A PhD student, in consultation with their supervisor(s), prepares an Individual Research Plan (IRP) including, in particular, a research schedule and a specific deadline for submission of the dissertation, and submits it to the director of the SD within 12 months from the date of commencement of training. The IRP should be prepared in Polish and English. 

2nd year of training

Mid-term evaluation
In the mid-term evaluation, the implementation of the IRP is evaluated, in particular, the timeliness and quality of the performance of tasks resulting from the schedule for the preparation of the doctoral dissertation.
Mid-term evaluation is carried out in the middle of the training period, i.e. at the end of semester 4 (September) or at the beginning of semester 5 (October).
The documentation for the mid-term evaluation, as specified in the SD Regulations, is prepared by the doctoral student in Polish and English and submitted to the office of the Doctoral School no later than July 31 if the mid-term evaluation takes place in September, or by September 15 if the mid-term evaluation is scheduled in October.

IV year of training

  1. Specialized lecture
    In the last semester of training, a doctoral student prepares a “Specialized Lecture” in the field of the represented discipline and presents it in the presence of members of the Discipline Council, e.g., at a faculty/institute seminar.
  2. Submission of dissertation:
    1. The doctoral dissertation must be submitted in accordance with the deadline specified in the IRP, no later than September 30 of the final year of study, having previously passed all modules/subjects specified in the educational framework plan.
    2. By “submission of a doctoral dissertation” is meant submission to the Degree Awarding Council or other entity authorized to confer a doctoral degree in a given discipline, of a doctoral dissertation prepared in accordance with Article 187 of the Law, together with the opinion of the supervisor or supervisors, and in accordance with the requirements set forth in the relevant regulations of the Degree Awarding Council or other entity authorized to confer a doctoral degree.
