Literatura zaangażowana w XX i XXI wieku

Engaged literature in the 20th and 21st centuries

The aim of this research project is an attempt to diagnose specific problems of modernity and a contemporary man as fictionalized in the literature of the German language area. In the long run, it is also an attempt to reconstruct the degree of intensity of the „politicalness” of contemporary literature, as well as its „political entanglement” (i.e., the frame of reference in which it appears and functions). Engaged literature, which provokes the reader to take a stand on the issues of key importance (moral, social, political – also in the global and local dimension) for a contemporary man, is understood as a social medium, and its „politicalness” („political thinking” in Carl Schmitt’s sense) is supported by the circumstances of its creation, its subject matter, events and characters referring to extra-literary reality, as well as the social reception of the work as an allusion, commentary, pamphlet or manifesto of commitment.

The subject of this study are contemporary literary texts that discuss social conflicts and tensions, also those that are not reflected in political decisions or media coverage; ones that take up taboo subjects and pose sensitive questions disturbing the order of everyday life and often contradicting the norms of political correctness.

Since politicalness is determined by the public reception, or the political use the researcher/critic/reader/translator makes of it, the research can also include reception and translation processes. With the dislocation of the original and its transfer into the culture of translation, the „politicisation” of a work can be severely weakened due to different cultural realities (social, political) and other ways of social reception (illegibility of allusions), and finally due to the quality of the translation itself, if the cultural contexts, polyphony and plurality of worlds (textual and non-textual) have not become the subject of the translator’s translation strategy. „Politicalness” may turn out to be a situationally and culturally changeable feature, and finally even a subjective one, and the feeling of politicalness of a given phenomenon, i.e., the conviction of its political character, political origin, conditioning, and meaning, may be marked by intentionality, bias and partiality. The research on engaged literature provoking a critical look at contemporary political and social processes, local and global, will take into account various interpretative practices, including tools from the field of cultural comparativism, anthropology of literature, sociology of literature, reception studies, translation studies, memory studies, trauma studies with comparative optics.
