Rzeź galicyjska posiada swoją legendę szlachecką i – mniej rozpowszechnioną – chłopską.

Podstawą porównania będzie bliskość kulturowa i historyczna (słowiańszczyzna, brak niezależnego państwa w wieku XIX, uwikłanie problematyki chłopskiej w ideologię komunistyczną, konieczność rekonstrukcji tożsamości narodowej w warunkach demokratycznych), podobne stosunki gospodarcze. Przedmiotem porównania będą różnice związane z rolą chłopa w narodowych dyskursach tożsamościowych w literaturze czeskiej i polskiej.

The cultural image of the peasant in Polish and / or Czech literature of the 19th-21st century

For several years in Polish literary studies, there has been a discussion about the sources of Polish identity, which has so far been identified with the traditions of noble culture. Literary works and scientific works in the field of the history of literature and anthropology are written, which not only appreciate the participation of peasants in the creation of national identity, but also point to those elements of Polish history which – due to the folk character – have so far been concealed and hidden by the traditional uniform cultural narrative. It is connected with the presentation of – previously considered marginal – facts such as the Galician raid in 1846 with its leader, Jakub Szela.

The Galician slaughter has its noble and – less widespread – peasant legend. The noble legend was expressed, for example, in Stanisław Wyspiański’s Wesele, showing Szela as a cruel and ruthless murderer. The confrontation with the hero of the events of 1846 was for Wyspiański an opportunity to speak about the possibility of reconciliation of two opposing social strata and a hidden criticism of the democratic aspirations of the nobility. Similar views were expressed in the works of Władysław Ludwik Anczyc (eg Chłopi arystokraci) or Stefan Żeromski (Rozdziobią nas kruki, wrony…).

The task would be to show the transformation of the image of the peasant on the basis of selected works of Polish literature from the 19th to the 21st century and to compare these images with the cultural representation of the peasant in selected works of Czech literature in the same time frames. The basis for the comparison will be the cultural and historical closeness (Slavicism, the lack of an independent state in the 19th century, the entanglement of peasant issues in the communist ideology, the need to reconstruct the national identity in democratic conditions), and similar economic relations. The subject of comparison will be the differences related to the role of the peasant in national identity discourses in Czech and Polish literature.
